Provided is a hydrophobic catalyst layer for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell to which hydrophobicity is imparted so that the dissipation property of produced water is improved and which simultaneously has an increased effective surface area and an increased utilization ratio of a catalyst, and a method of producing the same. The catalyst layer for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell is formed of: a catalyst obtained by reducing a platinum oxide; a hydrophobic agent; and a proton conductive electrolyte, in which the hydrophobic agent is mainly composed of alkylsiloxane. An Si compound containing a hydrophobic substituent is brought into contact with a platinum oxide. The Si compound is subjected to hydrolysis and a polymerization reaction owing to the catalytic action of the platinum oxide. After that, the platinum oxide is reduced, whereby a hydrophobic catalyst layer carrying an alkylsiloxane polymer is obtained.

La présente invention concerne une couche catalytique hydrophobe pour des piles à combustible de polymère solide dans laquelle la dispersion de l'eau produite est améliorée en donnant à la couche catalytique de propriétés hydrophobes tout en augmentant en même temps la surface effective et le taux d'utilisation du catalyseur. L'invention concerne aussi un procédé pour produire une telle couche catalytique. L'invention concerne spécifiquement une couche catalytique pour des piles à combustible de polymère solide qui est composée d'un catalyseur obtenu en réduisant un oxyde de platine, un agent hydrophobe et un électrolyte conducteur de protons. L'agent hydrophobe est principalement composé d'un alkylsiloxane. Un composé Si ayant un substituant hydrophobe mis en contact avec un oxyde de platine pour déclencher une hydrolyse et une réaction de polymérisation du composé Si par l'action catalytique de l'oxyde de platine, puis le produit obtenu est soumis à une réduction, produisant ainsi une couche catalytique hydrophobe supportant un polymère d'alkylsiloxane.
