A method for the removal of sulfate ions from an electrolyte of an electrochemical reduction-oxidation system wherein said electrolyte comprises a halogen and in which the sulfate ions are a contaminant or interferant, which method comprises the steps of: (i) increasing the halide concentration in the electrolyte by electrochemical reduction of the halogen, (ii) crystallising a sulfate salt out of the electrolyte, and (iii) separation of the electrolyte from the crystallised sulfate salt. An electrochemical process for energy storage and/or power delivery comprising the step of removal of sulfate ions from the electrolyte according to the above cited method is also disclosed.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'extraction d'ions sulfate d'un électrolyte d'un système de réduction-oxydation électrochimique dans lequel ledit électrolyte comprend un halogène et dans lequel les ions sulfate constituent un contaminant ou un agent perturbant, lequel procédé comprend les étapes consistant: (i) à augmenter la concentration d'halogénure dans l'électrolyte par réduction électrochimique de l'halogène, (ii) à cristalliser un sel de sulfate à partir de l'électrolyte, et (iii) à séparer l'électrolyte du sel de sulfate cristallisé.
