A bias voltage (V.alpha.) vectorially added to the controllable voltage (Vpq) injected in series with the line voltage (Vo) of a transmission line (3) reduces the required MVA rating for a unified power flow controller (UPFC) (1) in applications where the power in the transmission line (3) only flows in a single direction, or where the range of the transmission angle is otherwise unequal about zero.
