A method for embedding supplemental data in an encoded signal that is different from the format used for encoding data of the encoded signal and recording said signal on a disc-like record carrier by applying marks of a first physical type. The supplemental data is encoded in accordance with a second format that is different from the format used for encoding data of the encoded signal. Format description information related to the second format is recorded on the record carrier with either marks of the same physical type but modulated in accordance with a second, different modulation or with marks of a second type having different physical characteristics with respect to the first type.
