The present invention provides methods for the diagnosis or prognosis of cancer by measuring the level of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) or PTP1B nucleic acid in tissue suspected to be neoplastic, and comparing it to the level of PTP1B or PTP1B nucleic acid in normal tissue. An increase in the level of PTP1B or PTP1B nucleic acid in the suspect tissue suggests that the tissue is neoplastic or potentially neoplastic. The invention additionally provides methods for the diagnosis or prognosis of cancer by measuring the level of PTP1B enzymatic activity, or by detection of an altered PTP1B or PTP1B nucleic acid, in tissue suspected to be neoplastic. The methods of this invention are particularly useful for, but not restricted to, the diagnosis or prognosis of breast cancer.
