Patent

CA 2021201

An ink jet composition for printing paper, and which is a low viscosity fluid at room temperatures, comprises a sol wherein (a) the liquid medium comprises a non-aqueous solvent, preferably a glycol ether and (b) the disperse medium comprises an amount of a resin which is capable of forming a solution in the solvent at a temperature in the range 20 to 35°C and a dyestuff which is soluble in or bound to the resin at said temperature but is substantially insoluble in the solvent at said temperature; and optionally (c) a suspending agent. The resin and solvent may be chosen to farm a non-Newtonian solution whereby absorption of the solvent into the substrate to be printed causes the resin to gel or the resin may be chosen such that it is precipitated from solution in the solvent on contact with paper due to water or size in the paper.
