Abstract of the Disclosure A stent for both maintaining fluid flow through a body passage and controlling bleeding emanating from the walls of the body passage comprises an elongated tube having a lumen so that fluid can pass therethrough and a hygroscopic/ hydrophilic material which expands when wetted by water or aqueous body fluids to exert a hemostatic pressure to control bleeding emanating from the walls of the body passage. In one embodiment, the hygroscopic/hydrophilic material is coated on the outer wall of the tube. In another, it is in a chamber and in still another the hygroscopic/hydrophilic material is in a portion of the tube. INP\199\65139032 062890
