Abstract of the disclosure: Bisphosphinoalkanes of the formula (I) Image (I), where R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, aralkyl radicals having 7 to 12 carbon atoms and substituted or unsubstituted phenyl radicals, R6 and R7 are, independently of one another, halogen or NR4R5, R4 and R5 being alkyl radicals having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and n is 3 or 4, are industrially useful key compounds for the synthesis of numerous bisphosphinoalkanes, which are of interest as starting products for the preparation of catalytically active materials. The compounds of the formula (I) are prepared by reacting a bis(dialkylamino)phosphinous halide X-P(NR4R5)2 with a Grignard compound R1R2P-(CH2)n-MgX with the formation of a bisphosphinoalkane of the formula R1R2P-(CH2)n-P(NR4R5)2, which is then reacted with a hydrogen halide HX or with a phosphorus trihalide PX3.
