A variable-rigidity, small-gauge illuminator is disclosed, one embodiment being a small-gauge illumination surgical system comprising: a light source (12) for providing a light beam; an optical cable (14), optically coupled to the light source for receiving and transmitting the light beam, a handpiece (10), operably coupled to the optical cable; an optical fiber (22), operably coupled to the handpiece, wherein the optical fiber is optically coupled to the optical cable to receive and transmit the light beam to illuminate an area; and a cannula (16), operably coupled to the handpiece, for housing and directing the optical fiber, wherein the cannula is operable to extend and retract from the handpiece to vary the length of the cannula extending from the handpiece, and wherein the optical fiber is operably connected to the cannula such that the distal end of the optical fiber and the distal end of the cannula remain co-incident as the length of the cannula extending from the handpiece is varied. The optical fiber, the cannula and the handpiece can be fabricated from biocompatible materials.
L'invention concerne un illuminateur de rigidité variable et de petit gabarit, dont un mode de réalisation est constitué par un système chirurgical d'éclairage de petit gabarit comprenant : une source de lumière (12) fournissant un faisceau lumineux ; un câble optique (14) couplé optiquement à la source de lumière pour recevoir et transmettre le faisceau lumineux, une prise manuelle (10), couplée fonctionnellement au câble optique ; une fibre optique (22) couplée fonctionnellement à la prise manuelle, la fibre optique étant couplée optiquement au câble optique de manière à pouvoir recevoir et transmettre le faisceau lumineux pour éclairer une zone ; et une canule (16), couplée fonctionnellement à la prise manuelle pour recevoir et diriger la fibre optique, la canule pouvant être déployée et rétractée de la prise manuelle pour faire varier la longueur de la canule s'étendant depuis la prise manuelle, et la fibre optique étant connectée fonctionnellement à la canule de telle sorte que l'extrémité distale de la fibre optique et l'extrémité distale de la canule restent en coïncidence à mesure que la longueur de la canule s'étendant depuis la prise manuelle est variée. La fibre optique, la canule et la prise manuelle peuvent être fabriquées en matériaux biocompatibles.
