A process for preparing 3-alkoxy-5-alkylpyrazin-2- amines of the general formula: Image wherein R1 is a C1-C4-alkyl group or an aryl group and R2 is a C1-C4-alkoxy group or an aryloxy group, starting either from from aminomalononitrile or from aminoacetonitrile. The process produces 3-alkoxy-5-akylpyrazin-2-amines with sufficient enough yield to be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pterine-6-carboxyaldehyde.
