A new culture medium for identifying the presence of Salmonella inenterobacteria samples, especially faeces, contains two chr omogenic enzyme substrates, one of which is a substrate for .alpha.-D- galactosidase, for which Salmonella is positive. The other substrate is one for which Salmonella is negative such as .beta.-D-galactosidase. The substrates are incorporated into an agar medium. Positive and negative results are found to be readily observable where one of the substrates is an esculetin, preferably a cyclohexenoesculetin compound in the presence of ferric ions, which produces a black colour, and the other substrate is an indoxyl compound, for instance a 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl compound which produces a green coloured enzymic reaction product.

Divulgation d'un nouveau milieu de culture servant à identifier la présence de Salmonella dans des échantillons contenant des entérobactéries, en particulier des matières fécales. Ce milieu est composé de deux substrats enzymatiques chromogènes, l'un est un substrat pour l'.alpha.-D- galactosidase, pour lequel Salmonella a une réponse positive, l'autre est un substrat pour lequel Salmonella a une réponse négative, tel que la .bêta.-D-galactosidase. Ces substrats sont incorporés dans un milieu de culture à la gélose. On a constaté que les résultats positifs et négatifs peuvent être facilement observés quand l'un des substrat est une esculétine, de préférence une cyclohexénoesculétine en présence d'ions ferriques, qui produit une coloration noire, et l'autre substrat étant un indoxyle, par exemple un 5-bromo-4-chloroindol-3-yle produisant un produit de réaction enzymatique de couleur verte.
