The invention relates to a system for augmenting the coverage, information and robustness of an automatic identification system of ships, said system incorporates standard AIS-type means, satellite links, coastal stations and processing centres handling the coordination of the means (maximising the coverage of the system in time) and the processing of the data (merging of different information to create extended context information). It implements a scheduling algorithm for the resources mobilised, in order to optimise the coverage by ensuring a given level of redundancy for the purposes of reliability and responsiveness of the system.
