The invention relates generally to a method of determining the presence of a mineral within a material, such as a rock, a rock fragment, soil, sand or other geological material including: applying pulsed microwave radiation to the material; detecting radiation emitted from the material after the application of the pulsed microwave radiation; and analysing the detected radiation to determine the presence of mineral within the material. The invention also provides a method of sorting rock fragments into at least two streams using this method and an apparatus for carrying out the method.

Procédé pour déterminer la présence d'un minéral dans un matériau, tel qu'une roche, un fragment de roche, du sol, du sable ou un autre matériau géologique, comprenant les étapes consistant à : appliquer un rayonnement micro-ondes pulsé au matériau ; détecter le rayonnement émis par le matériau après l'application du rayonnement micro-ondes pulsé ; et analyser le rayonnement détecté pour déterminer la présence de minéral à l'intérieur du matériau. L'invention concerne également un procédé de tri de fragments de roche en au moins deux flux à l'aide de ce procédé et un appareil pour réaliser le procédé.
