A B S T R A C T Composite footwear is disclosed comprising a flexible upper portion having an upper and lower opening, a moulded base shell having an upper opening for receiving the flexible upper about the perimeter thereof and a base portion having an open mid-sole, a mid-sole anchor piece having a reinforcement shank and adapted for closing the open mid-sole of the base shell during assembly of the footwear, and a unit sole adapted to receive the molded base shell. The open mid-sole of the base shell is adapted to receive a sewing machine arm for stitching the upper portion i to the base shell prior to lasting the footwear.
