A pusher unit is provided for shopping carts or other similar carrying vehicles which have a load area, non-castering rear wheels, castering front wheels and a pushing handle. The pusher unit is pivotally connected to a transverse bar at the rear of the cart, has its own power source, motor, and drive wheel, which wheel can rotate on a vertical axis. The operator sits on a seat atop the pusher unit and grasps the cart's handle, which is provided with a control unit, giving the operator control over the direction of travel, starting and stopping, and the speed of travel. A linkage is provided between the cart and the pusher unit such that when the operator steers the cart, to change direction, as by moving the handle thereof clockwise or counterclockwise, such movement is transmitted to the drive wheel to cause it to pivot on its vertical axis in a direction opposite to the steering movement. This improves the steering performance, allowing the articulated vehicle combination to go around sharp corners. By using the pusher unit of the invention people who may be physically challenged are able to shop in supermarkets and other large stores, using a full size cart and they can acquire as many items as other shoppers, without restriction, while still being able to take a child along, if desired.
