Apparatus for the trenchless replacement or installation of a pipe comprises a stationary frame portion and a movable frame portion capable of movement relative to the stationary frame portion along a working axis. A power source is operative between the stationary and moveable frame portions for effecting movement of the moveable frame portion. Gripping means is provided on the moveable frame portion for connection to a stem of a pipe removing or installation tool. The gripping means comprises a first gripping member for supporting the stem on one side of the stem and a second gripping member in opposed relationship to the first gripping member. The second gripping member is moveable relative to the first gripping member for gripping the stem on an opposite side of the stem. The actuation member is in sliding contact with the second gripping member along a second axis which is inclined with respect to the working axis. The actuation member is capable of movement with the second gripping member for pressing the second gripping member into contact with the stem.
