In one aspect, the invention encompasses a method of forming a steel. A metallic glass is formed and at least a portion of the glass is converted to a crystalline steel material having a nanocrystalline scale grain size. In another aspect, the invention encompasses another method of forming a steel. A molten alloy is formed and cooled at a rate which forms a metallic glass. The metallic glass is devitrified to convert the glass to a crystalline steel material having a nanocrystalline scale grain size. In yet another aspect, the invention encompasses another method of forming a steel. A first metallic glass steel substrate is provided (100), and a molten alloy is formed (102) over the first metallic glass steel substrate (100) to heat and devitrify at least some of the underlying metallic glass (108) of the substrate.

Dans un mode de réalisation, l'invention se rapporte à un procédé de formation d'un acier. Un verre métallique est formé et une partie au moins de ce verre est transformée en un matériau d'acier cristallin présentant une taille de grain d'échelle nanocristalline. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, l'invention se rapporte à un autre procédé de formation d'un acier. Un alliage en fusion est formé et refroidi à une vitesse permettant la formation d'un verre métallique. Ce verre métallique est dévitrifié afin de transformer le verre en un matériau d'acier cristallin présentant une taille de grain d'échelle nanocristalline. Dans un dernier mode de réalisation, l'invention concerne un autre procédé de formation d'un acier. Un alliage en fusion est formé sur un premier substrat en acier de verre métallique de manière à chauffer et dévitrifier une partie au moins du verre métallique sous-jacent du substrat.
