An exhaust manifold (7) of an en- gine (I) is connected to a three way (TW) catalyst (8a), and the TW cata- lyst (8a) is connected to an NHs ad- sorbing and oxidizing (NH3-AO) cata- lyst (10a). The engine (I) performs the lean and the rich engine operations al- ternately and repeatedly. When the en- gine (1) performs the rich operation and thereby the exhaust gas air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the TW catalyst (8a) is made rich, NO x in the inflowing exhaust gas is converted to NHs in the TW catalyst (8a). The NH3 is then adsorbed in the NH3-AO cata- lyst (10a). Next, when the engine (1) performs the lean operation and thereby the exhaust gas air-fuel ratio of the ex- haust gas flowing into the TW cata- lyst (8a) is made lean, NO x in the ex- hausted gas passes through the TW cat- alyst (8a), and flows into the NHs-AO catalyst (10a). At this time, NH3 ad- sorbed in the catalyst (10a) is desorbed therefrom, and reduces the inflowing NO x.

Cette invention concerne un collecteur d'échappement (7) d'un moteur (1), lequel collecteur est connecté à un catalyseur (8a) à trois voies (TW) lui-même connecté à un catalyseur (10a) d'adsorption et d'oxydation (NH3-AO) de NH3. Le moteur (1) possède des modes de fonctionnement riche et pauvre alternés et répétitifs. Lorsque le moteur (1) est en mode de fonctionnement riche, et que le rapport air-carburant des gaz d'échappement passant dans le catalyseur TW (8a) devient riche, le NOx contenu dans les gaz d'échappement entrants est converti en NH3 dans ledit catalyseur TW (8a). Le NH3 est ensuite adsorbé dans le catalyseur NH3-AO (10a). Ensuite, lorsque le moteur (1) est en mode de fonctionnement pauvre, et que le rapport air-carburant des gaz d'échappement passant dans le catalyseur TW (8a) devient pauvre, le NOx contenu dans les gaz évacués passe à travers le catalyseur TW (8a), puis dans le catalyseur NH3-AO (10a). A ce moment, le NH3 adsorbé dans le catalyseur (10a) est désorbé de ce dernier, la quantité de NOx entrant étant réduite.
