A process for the selective catalytic reduction of a nitrogen oxide present in a gas mixture containing oxygen, comprises separating the nitrogen oxide and oxygen from one another to provide a substantially oxygen-free gas mixture containing the nitrogen oxide and reacting the nitrogen oxide contained therein with an organic reducing agent in the presence of a catalyst and in a substantially oxygen-free atmosphere defined by the substantially oxygen-free gas mixture, thereby reducing the nitrogen oxide to nitrogen. The process of the invention enables one to substantially completely remove NO X from oxygen-rich gas mixtures and convert same to harmless N2, in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
