ABSTRACT Method of coding images at very low data rate and coding/decoding device implementing this method The method of differential coding of blocks of images consists in coding the difference (9, 11, 6, 8) between the current block of the image to be transmitted and one of the four blocks of the reconstructed current image (17) in the closest vicinity of the block. In order to do that the coding/decoding device includes a differential image coding device including a quantifier (6) coupled to a variable-length coding device (8), a predictor (5) and a device for reconstruction of the transmitted image (7) coupled to a first image memory (17) and further includes a second image memory (19) for storing the image blocks previously reconstructed in the current image. Application to transmission at very low data rate, especially for video telephony. FIGURE 1
