A device designed for retrieving golf balls. The mechanism includes an extension rod and a retrieval cup. Integral to the cup is an internally positioned ring which includes a series of hinged retaining pawls. By means of the extension rod the cup is positioned over the golf ball. A continued vertical downward movement causes the pawls to rotate on an internal ring thereby accepting the golf ball within the recovery cup. As the cup is raised, the pawls will grip and hold the ball within the cup. The golf ball retriever can then be moved to an area where the ball can be dislodged. To disengage the ball from the cup, the retrieval tube is rotated thereby allowing the ball to fall free through the opposite diameter of the recovery cup.
