The present invention is a surge anchor mechanism for a downhole assembly for a well bore. The mechanism includes an upper housing having a downhole end having a frustoconical shape with radially extending sloped surfaces and a lower housing having a frustoconical shoulder with radially extending sloped surfaces. The lower housing is telescopingly received into the upper housing and incorporates a spring to allow the lower housing to move independently of the upper housing. The sloped surfaces of the upper and lower housings define a recess. The mechanism further includes slip members biasedly mounted on the lower housing in the recess and having complementary sloped surfaces corresponding to sloped surfaces on the upper and lower housings.
