The present invention relates to a process for extruding, under a controlled atmosphere made up of inert gas, a polyethylene mixed with and/or containing a reactive gas liable to react with the polyethylene in the extrusion conditions, in an extruder fed with polyethylene by a feed hopper. The process is characterised in that an inert purging gas is introduced into the extruder in a zone where the poly- ethylene is not completely melted and at a distance from the feed hopper such that the inert purging gas introduced forms a gas mixture with the reactive gas entrained with the polyethylene into the extruder and then flows back in the direction of the feed hopper countercurrentwise to the flow of the polyethylene and is discharged out of the extruder.
