A mitral valve is removed from a pig heart with the annulus, leaflets, chordae tendineae and papillary heads intact. The porcine mitral valve is fixed. A covering material is attached to the papillary heads around the chordae tendineae. A sewing tube of a flexible material is attached to each of the papillary heads by sutures that extend through the covering material. The sewing tube extends away from the porcine mitral valve's papillary head remnants. A covering material is attached to the annulus. A human heart with a diseased or damaged human mitral valve is imaged in vivo to size the length between the mitral valve annulus and the papillary heads. The porcine mitral valve annulus to sewing tube length is adjusted to match the like dimension in the human heart by trimming the sewing tube. The human heart is opened and the mitral valve excised. The human heart's cordae tendineae are removed leaving the papillary heads intact. The porcine mitral valve is placed in the left ventricle and the sewing tubes are sutured to arespective papillary head. The mitral valve is sutured in place in the annulus and the human heart is closed.

Selon la présente invention, on retire du coeur d'un porc une valve mitrale en conservant intacts l'anneau mitral, les feuillets valvulaires mitraux, les cordages tendineux et les têtes de piliers. Après avoir procédé à une fixation de la valve mitrale, on attache aux têtes de piliers un matériau de couverture autour des cordages tendineux. On attache ensuite à chacune des têtes de piliers, par des sutures traversant le matériau de couverture, une gaine cousue faite d'un matériau flexible. La gaine cousue part des moignons de têtes de piliers de la valve mitrale porcine. On attache également à l'anneau mitral un matériau de couverture. Un examen par imagerie in vivo de la valve mitrale du coeur humain atteint ou lésé permet de connaître la longueur entre l'anneau mitral et les têtes de piliers. On raccourcit ensuite la gaine cousue pour faire correspondre la longueur entre anneau mitral porcin et la gaine cousue à son homologue sur le coeur humain. On procède ensuite sur le sujet humain à la cardiotomie et à l'excision de la valve mitrale, laissant intactes les têtes de piliers après ablation des cordages tendineux du coeur humain. Après avoir mis en place la valve mitrale porcine dans le ventricule gauche et suturé les gaines cousues à leurs têtes de piliers respectives, on suture à demeure la valve mitrale dans l'anneau mitral, à la suite de quoi on referme le coeur humain.
