A compound of the formula A-R-X or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof can be used to manufacture a pharmaceutical preparation which serves to prevent or treat cancers, pathological sequelae of alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, acute and chronic pancreatitis, toxic renal disorders, hepatic insulin resistance in diabetes mellitus, liver damage associated with Wilson's disease and sideroses, ischemia reperfusion damage, as antidote to environmental poisons and medicament intoxication, for prolonging the residence time of medicaments in the organism, or for controlling toxic side effects on administration of chemotherapeutic agents. In the formula, R is an aliphatic or aromatic C6 to C40 hydrocarbon radical which has a hydrophilic end A, and X is a radical having at least one free electron pair of a carbon atom or heteroatom and/or p electrons.
