A process for producing .alpha.-amino acid from starting material comprising .alpha.-amino amide enantiomers (A) and (B) is such that enantiomer (A) is converted preferentially over enantiomer (B) so that a time independent excess of at least 90 %, preferably at least 98 % is given. The reaction is catalysed by an amidase which may in particular be produced by specific Rhodococcus species.

Procédé pour produire des acides aminés .alpha. à partir d'une matière initiale comprenant des énantiomères d'amides aminés .alpha. (A) et (B) dans lequel l'énantiomère (A) est converti de préférence par l'énantiomère (B) de manière à obtenir un excès indépendant du temps d'au moins 90 %, et de préférence d'au moins 98 %. La réaction est catalysée par une amidase que peut notamment être produite par des variétés spécifiques de Rhodococcus.
