Abstract By continuously varying the polarisation state of a modulated optical carrier at the transmitter over a period at least equal to the symbol period of the modulation, a coherent optical-fibre transmission system can be rendered insensitive to fluctuations in the polarisation state of the electromagnetic field as the carrier propagates along a single-mode optical fibre. This technique avoids spectral broadening of the intermediate frequency signal at the receiver, while ensuring the reception of half the power from the fibre.
