ABSTRACT An isolated, recombinant or synthetic polypeptide (corresponding with PA-I lectin) comprises the following amino acid sequence: Image Derived homologs, mutants, fragments and fused proteins possessing immunological activity useful against P. aeruginosa; vaccines against P. aeruginosa infection which contain such materials; the gene encoding the PA-I recombinant polypeptide; related polypeptides and polynucleotides; a method for detecting a suspect P. aeruginosa strain; fused proteins having immunomodulatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antitumor activity; an immune cell or a tumor cell containing as an implant a PA-I encoding polynucleotide, and a method for treating cancer by administering to a cancer patient such cells containing implants; and a conjugate in which the polypeptide is linked to an antineoplastic drug or a monoclonal antibody against tumor- associated antigens, are also included.
