Abstract Micro-preparative gel electrophoresis apparatus with continuous elution has quickly interchangeable gel columns. Increase in electric field intensity at the elution interface is managed by change in cross sectional area, and bubbles are avoided through pressurization of buffer systems using Helium gas and placement of the high voltage electrode at the elution end of the gel column downstream from the elution chamber. The apparatus avoids unmanageable heating effects through the micro-scale of components, and the column itself is small enough that its temperature can effectively be controlled using a Peltier heating/cooling element. Computerized control for automatic electrophoresis, on-line detection, and sample collection is provided.
