An optical transmitter of the type having DPSH-IM (Direct Phase-shift and Self-Homodyne Intensity Modulation) applied thereto is disclosed in which a periodic signal having the period corresponding to one time slot of a modulation current pulse for a laser diode, together with the modulation current pulse, is superposed on a bias current and the transmission waveform is thereby remarkably improved.
