ABSTRACT A dense medium is made by forming an emulsion of molten metal alloy droplets in a liquid carrier. The droplets may subsequently be solidified to form a suspension. The emulsion is made by introducing the metal alloy in solid form into the liquid carrier, heating up the liquid to above the melting point of the alloy, and dispersing the molten alloy in droplet form in the liquid. The dispersion step can be achieved using an ultrasonic transducer and sonotrode.
