A grass trimmer having a support shaft with reciprocating cutters at the bottom and a support wheel on the support shaft adjacent the cutters for supporting the cutters just above the ground. A hand grip on the upper end of the support shaft is used to "walk" the trimmer along the grass, rolling along on the support wheel, while the cutters are relatively reciprocated to cut grass. The cutters can be relatively reciprocated by operating a hand lever on the shaft, which, through a first drive means, reciprocates one of the cutters relative to the other. The cutters can also be reciprocated by the rotation of the support wheel through a second drive means. Preferably the second drive means can be used together with the first drive means. The trimmer preferably has energy storage means associated with the drive means for more evenly operating the cutters.
