The invention relates to the use of homoaconitase as a novel target for fungicides. The invention also relates to the identification and isolation of the nucleic acid sequence SEQ ID No: 1 coding for the protein homoaconitase and the functional equivalents thereof, and to a method for identifying compounds having fungicidal action based on the above-mentioned nucleic acid sequences or the proteins coded by said sequences. The invention further relates to a transgenic organism containing the SEQ ID NO: 1 or a functional equivalent of the SEQ ID NO:l, which is characterised by increased lysine production compared to a non-transgenic fungus.
