A technique for forming orthopaedic splints or supports includes the steps of impregnating the edges of casting material with non-rigid bonding material and subsequently impregnating the casting material with water hardenable material such as urethane. The edge treatment (16) keeps the edges in a relatively cushioning or non-rigid state to avoid irritation of the skin of the patient. The blanks may be formed using a mold having a groove defining the outline of the casting blank (12), and a ridge for implementing the impregnation of a bead of bonding material into the casting fabric (20). The casting blank (12) material may be formed of spacer or double knit type material, or may be formed of several layers of fabric (20) including high strength filaments, and may have padding material as one layer.

Ce procédé consiste à imprégner les bords d'un matériau de coulage d'un matériau de liaison non rigide puis à imprégner le matériau de coulage d'un matériau durcissable à l'eau tel que l'uréthane. Le traitement des bords (16) permet de leur conserver un état relativement amortisseur ou non rigide pour éviter toute irritation de la peau du patient. Les ébauches peuvent être formées à l'aide d'un moule pourvu d'une rainure définissant les contours de l'ébauche de coulée (12) et d'une nervure destinée à l'application de l'imprégnation d'un cordon de matériau de liaison dans le tissu de coulée (20). Le matériau de l'ébauche de coulée (12) peut être constitué d'un matériau de type espaceur ou double maille, ou peut être constitué de plusieurs couches de tissu (20) contenant des filaments haute résistance, et peut avoir un matériau de remplissage comme une couche.
