A method of increasing the hydrogen/carbon monoxide (H2/CO) ratio in a syngas stream derived from a carbonaceous fuel including coal, brown coal, peat, and heavy residual oil fractions, preferably coal, wherein the fuel-derived syngas stream is divided into at least two sub-streams, one of which undergoes a catalytic water shift conversion reaction, and the so-obtained converted sub- stream is combined with the non-converted sub-stream (s) to form a second syngas stream with an increased H2/CO ratio. The method of the present invention can provide a syngas with a H2/CO ratio more suitable for efficient hydrocarbon synthesis carried out on a given catalyst, such as in one or more Fischer-Tropsch reactors, as well as being able to accommodate variation in the H2/CO ratio of syngas formed from different qualities of feedstock fuels .

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'accroître le rapport hydrogène/oxyde de carbone (H2/CO) dans un flux de gaz de synthèse dérivé d'un combustible carboné, notamment de charbon, de lignite, de tourbe et de fractions huileuses résiduelles lourdes, de préférence de charbon, le flux de gaz de synthèse dérivé du gaz étant divisé en au moins deux sous-flux, l'un d'eux subissant une réaction de conversion catalytique, et le sous-flux converti ainsi obtenu étant combiné au(x) sous-flux non converti(s) afin de former un second flux de gaz de synthèse présentant un rapport H2/CO accru. Le procédé selon la présente invention permet d'obtenir un gaz de synthèse présentant un rapport H2/CO plus approprié pour la synthèse efficace d'hydrocarbures mise en oeuvre sur un catalyseur donné, tel que dans des réacteurs Fischer-Tropsch, et permet de supporter une variation du rapport H2/CO du gaz de synthèse formé à partir de différentes qualités de combustibles de départ.
