Naturally occurring IgM anti-lymphocyte autoantibodies bind to CD4 on the T lymphocytes, and downmodulate certain other receptors including CD2 on T cells and CD80 and CD86 on macrophages. Such antibodies enhance inhibition of HIV-1 from infecting cells and in addition inhibits activation and proliferation of T lymphocytes. The antibodies described herein are "naturally occurring" i.e. develop from birth in absence of deliberate immunization and secondly these antibodies are distinct from disease causing autoantibodies in that these naturally occurring antibodies are polyreactive with low binding affinity.
