A liquid composition containing a ceramic precursor polymer and a refractory solid charge is applied to the surface of the part to be treated. After cross- linking, the polymer is transformed into a ceramic by heat treatment and a ceramic deposit is then formed by chemical infiltration in a vapor phase. The surface of the part is leveled prior to chemical infiltration in a vapor phase in order to return to the initial geometry of the composite material part to be formed, by chemical infiltration in a vapor phase, a deposit obturating the residual microporosity on the leveled surface of the part.
