A cutting tool (1A, 1B) including a toolholder (2) For releasably receiving a plurality of quadrilateral cutting inserts (3, 21) in which adjacent cutting inserts are partially nested for their greater compaction and whereby their operative cutting edges overlap so as to present an effectively continuous cutting edge. The cutting inserts (3, 21) each have upper (5) and lower (7) surfaces, a side surface (9) associated with a cutting edge (14) and a pair of opposite side surfaces (10, 11) directed transversely thereto, the insert having upper (15) and base (23) edges defined by the respective intersections of the upper and lower surfaces and a first of the opposite side surfaces, at least one of the surfaces associated with the base edge having a recessed portion (17, 22) of varying depth relative to the upper edge along imaginary lines parallel to the cutting edge in a bottom view of the cutting insert, the depth being maximal remote from the cutting edge.
