A superabsorbent fibrous web is disclosed. This web is formed from wood pulp or cellulosic fibers, natural fibers, synthetic fibers, or any mixture thereof wherein the web is treated with aqueous solutions of superabsorbent polyelectrolytes which produce a fibrous web having substantially increased absorbency rates and absorbent capacity. These webs are useful in the manufacture of towels, diapers, etc.
