There is disclosed a hoisting plug assembly including: a hoisting plug body having a first end portion adapted to be attached to the upper end of a drill rod. A hoisting plug eye member is connected to that end of the plug body which is opposite the first end portion for rotation relative thereto about a rotation or swivel axis. A spring acts between said plug body and plug eye and permits motion of said plug body away from said plug eye along said axis and provides a measure of resiliency in the axial direction. This permits threaded drill rod joints to be fully made up or connected without overstressing the threads while the plug eye member is maintained at a generally fixed elevation by a hoisting cable secured to the eye member.
