The invention is a process for accelerating the disclosure of the presence of hydrocarbon by using pattern recognition to search a scanned-image well log database. In the past, many oil&gas wells were never brought into production because at the time they were drilled, the amount of hydrocarbon found was not economical due to either low commodity prices or a lack of an economic way of getting the hydrocarbon to market. Because of these and other factors, large amounts of hydrocarbon that was discovered in the past was not produced and the wells were plugged and left as "dry and abandoned". Today, due to higher commodity prices and plentiful delivery mechanisms, there is tremendous effort expended by exploration and production companies to both locate and re-enter these types of wells in order to produce the by-passed hydrocarbon, and to drill new wells in proximity. In a large number of cases the mineral rights to these wells are readily available.
