A method of increasing the structural strength of a hollow load bearing member such as a pile (12), particularly for the purpose of repairing a damaged pile, includes the steps of fitting a rigid structural insert (17) into the pile (12) and spaced therefrom to form an interspace (18), filling the interspace (18) with an expansive filler (19), and allowing the filler (19) to set and expand in the interspace (18) to impose tensile hoop stresses in the pile (12) and corresponding compressive hoop stresses in the insert (17), to enhance the load transfer between the pile (12) and the insert (17)

Cette invention porte sur un procédé qui permet de renforcer la résistance structurale d'un élément de support creux tel qu'une pile (12), en particulier lorsqu'il s'agit de réparer une pile endommagée, consistant, dans un premier temps, à emboîter un insert structural rigide (17) dans la pile (12) en respectant une distance entre les deux éléments de façon à laisser un espace intermédiaire (18), dans un deuxième temps, à remplir cet espace intermédiaire (18) avec un matériau de remplissage expansif (19) et enfin, à laisser ce matériau de remplissage (19) prendre et se développer dans l'espace intermédiaire (18) et exercer ainsi des tensions circonférentielles à l'intérieur du pieu (12) et des sollicitations de compression circonférentielles à l'intérieur de l'insert (17) de manière à améliorer le transfert de charge entre la pile (12) et l'insert (17).
