A method of defeating or reducing the effects of an enhancement signal that is added or inserted to a copy protection signal located in a video portion of a video signal that includes a video synchronization signal. The enhancement signal causes a video retrace at a time other than the occurrence of the video synchronization signal. The method includes generating a control signal indicative of a location of the enhancement signal and providing a modifying signal of predetermined level (or duration). Finally, a part of the enhancement signal is modified with the modifying signal in response to the control signal to defeat or reduce the effects of the enhancement signal.
