A method of mass spectrometry having steps of, in a first cycle: storing sample ions in a first ion storage device, the first ion storage device having an exit aperture and a spatially separate ion transport aperture; ejecting the stored ions out of the exit aperture; transporting the ejected ions into an ion selection device which is spatially separated from the said first ion storage device; carrying out ion selection within the spatially separated ion selection device; returning at least some of the ions ejected from the first ion storage device, or their derivatives, back from the spatially separate ion selection device to the first ion storage device, following the step of ion selection; receiving the said returned ions through the ion transport aperture of the first ion storage device; and storing the received ions in the first ion storage device.

L'invention concerne un procédé de spectrométrie de masse comprenant les étapes consistant à, dans un premier cycle, stocker des ions échantillons dans un premier dispositif de stockage d'ions pourvu d'un orifice d'évacuation et d'un orifice de transport d'ions séparé spatialement; évacuer les ions stockés par l'orifice d'évacuation; transporter les ions évacués dans un dispositif de sélection d'ions qui est séparé spatialement de premier dispositif de stockage; effectuer une sélection des ions à l'intérieur du dispositif de sélection séparé spatialement; renvoyer au moins certains des ions évacués du premier dispositif de stockage, ou leurs dérivés, du dispositif de sélection séparé spatialement au premier dispositif de stockage, après l'étape de sélection d'ions; recueillir les ions renvoyés au moyen de l'orifice de transport du premier dispositif de stockage et stocker dans ce dernier les ions renvoyés.
