A method to synthesize benzyl group protected alpha-pentagalloylglucose (.alpha.-PGG) and related compounds. The method comprises the steps of: suspending a highly reactive acylation agent and an acylating catalyst in a donor solvent; adding .alpha.-D-glucose or an analogue thereof to the mixture; reacting the mixture at room temperature for a time sufficient for reaction to occur; evaporating the solvent; taking up the residue in an appropriate solvent; filtering the residue and solvent mixture; and evaporating off the solvent.

Procédé de synthèse d'alpha-pentagalloylglucose (.alpha.-PGG) et composés apparentés, qui consiste à mettre en suspension un agent d'acylation hautement réactif et un catalyseur d'acylation dans un solvant donneur, à ajouter du .alpha.-D-glucose ou un analogue de ladite substance au mélange, à faire réagir le mélange à température ambiante pendant un laps de temps suffisant pour que la réaction se produise, à faire évaporer le solvant, à mélanger le résidu dans un solvant approprié, à filtrer le mélange de résidu et de solvant et à faire évaporer le solvant.
