A stitching machine (10) and method orients cooperating needle (54) and hook (56) components in spaced horizontal alignment, suspends and tensions flexible sheets (57) to be stitched in a generally vertical orientation between the components for stitching interior seams through the flexible sheets. Horizontal and vertical slides (22) support the cooperating sewing machine components along a horizontal and a vertical axis parallel to the sheets. Controlled drives shift the components in unison along these axes for forming sewn patterns on the sheets. A conveyor (68) is provided with a substantially vertical run, of a height in excess of that of the sheets, to pass the sheets to be stitched between the sewing components and hold the sheets in the vertical orientation.

L'invention concerne une machine à piquer (10) et son procédé. Ledit procédé consiste à orienter des composants coopérants aiguille (54) et crochet (56) selon un alignement horizontal espacé ; à suspendre et à tendre des pans (57) de tissu souples à piquer dans un sens généralement vertical entre les composants afin de piquer les coutures intérieures à travers les pans de tissu souples. Des coulisses (22) horizontale et verticale portent les composants coopérants de la machine à coudre le long d'un axe horizontal et d'un axe vertical parallèles aux pans de tissu. Des dispositifs d'entraînement commandés permettant de déplacer les composants à l'unisson le long de ces axes pour former des motifs cousus sur les pans de tissu. Pour ce faire, on utilise un convoyeur (68) à course sensiblement verticale, dont la hauteur dépasse celle des pans de tissu, ce qui permet de faire passer les pans de tissu à piquer entre les composants de la machine à coudre, et de maintenir les pans de tissu dans un sens vertical.
