ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mold closing unit for an injection molding machine includes a movable mold carrier cooperating with a stationary mold carrier; a first piston slidably received in a first hydraulic cylinder and dividing it into a high-pressure chamber and a low-pressure chamber which are connectable to one another by a transfer channel; a first piston rod connecting the first piston with the movable mold carrier for applying a holding pressure to the closed mold; a second piston slidably received in a second hydraulic cylinder; a second piston rod connecting the second piston with the movable mold carrier for applying thereto a shifting force for movement relative to the stationary mold carrier; a valve opening or closing the transfer channel; and first and second work chambers connected to the valve for applying thereto a valve opening and a valve closing motion, respectively. The second hydraulic cylinder or the conduit which supplies the second hydraulic cylinder with pressurized hydraulic fluid is in open communication with the first work chamber.
