ABSTRACT A unidirectional surgical drain is described to prevent or minimize the backflow of its contents under atmospheric pressure. Backflow of surgical drain contents, which may have become contaminated, often occurs during removal of the drain from the body. In the present invention this leakage and spillage is prevented by means of unidirectional inlets along the tubular drain wall within the patient's body, and a unidirectional valve, or a plug at the distal opening of the drain tube. These inlets enable the body fluids to flow only in the direction from the outside into the inside of the drain tube. The unidirectional inlets may be any medical one-way valve including: cross-shaped incisions, tri-arm-shaped incisions, leaf valves, overlap valves, collapsible tube valves, or any other means permitting flow in only one direction. This invention applies to drains used with gravity of capillarity systems or with suction vacuum apparatus.
