-13- "INSULATED MANIFOLD WITH DOUBLE CAST WALLS" ABSTRACT A composite article (10) and method of forming the same wherein an inner casting (11) is separated from an outer casting (12) by an insulative portion (13) defining the pattern for the outer surface (14) of the inner casting (11) and the pattern for the inner surface (15) of the outer casting (12). The insulative portion (13) is captured between the castings (11,12) to define a thermal barrier there between. The castings (11,12) are formed by gasifying an expendable gasifiable pattern (16,17) corresponding to the inner and outer castings (11,12), respectively. The patterns (16,17) are assembled with the insulative portion (13) of the article (10)disposed therebetween and a mold (32) is formed aboul: the assembled patterns (16,17) and insulative portion (13). Upon pouring of molten casting metal (27) into the mold, the ex- pendable patterns (16,17) are gasified into the mold, (32) permitting the inner (11) and outer (12) portions of the article (10) to be cast about the insulative portion (13) to form the desired final composite ar- ticle (10).
