A telephone speed-dialer for use with a personal digital assistant (PDA) or other mobile device has an infrared transceiver for communication therewith. The dialer unit is connected to a land-based phone line, and remains next to a phone. When a user desires to make a phone call to a number on his or her PDA's address book, the user selects the phone number in the address book and sends the number via infrared link (i.e. "beams" it) to the dialer. After the dialer receives the number from the PDA, the dialer senses when the user picks up the receiver of the adjacent phone, and automatically dials the phone number with proper area code and any predialing digits. Preferably, the dialer emulates another PDA receiving an electronic business card from the user's PDA, so that no special software need be installed on the user's PDA other than the existing operating system. To conserve battery power when not in use, the dialer remains in a "sleep mode" until it senses infrared activity. In an alternative embodiment, the dialer communicates with the PDA with a short range radio frequency link, such as that specified in the emerging Bluetooth Standard, instead of with the infrared link.
La présente invention concerne un téléphone automatique à numérotation rapide utilisable avec un assistant numérique personnel (PDA) ou autre dispositif mobile comportant un émetteur-récepteur à infrarouge permettant de communiquer. L'unité de numérotation est reliée à une ligne téléphonique terrestre, et se trouve à proximité d'un appareil téléphonique. Lorsqu'un utilisateur désire faire un appel téléphonique dans le carnet d'adresses de son PDA, l'utilisateur choisit le numéro de téléphone dans le carnet d'adresses et envoie le numéro via une liaison infrarouge (en forme de faisceau) vers l'appeleur. Lorsque l'appeleur reçoit le numéro en provenance du PDA, l'appeleur détecte le moment où l'utilisateur décroche l'appareil téléphonique voisin, et compose automatiquement le numéro comportant l'indicatif régional et, le cas échéant, d'autres éléments numériques. De préférence, l'appeleur imite un autre PDA recevant une carte professionnelle électronique en provenance du PDA de l'utilisateur, de sorte qu'il n'est pas nécessaire d'installer un logiciel spécial sur le PDA de l'utilisateur autre que celui existant déjà dans le système opérationnel. Afin de préserver l'alimentation par batterie, l'appeleur reste en mode sommeil jusqu'à la détection d'activité infrarouge. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, l'appeleur communique avec le PDA par une liaison radioélectrique à faible portée, comme prescrit par le nouveau Bluetooth Standard, au lieu de la liaison infrarouge.
